Blue Plaque for James Humbert Craig - 6 April 2009

A cold drizzle over the windswept bay did not dampen the spirits of the guests arriving for the unveiling of the blue plaque at 'Turnamona', the former home of artist 'Jimmy' Craig. The view from the cottage, even on the dull day that was in it, was enough to inspire in anyone the urge to capture something its charm. The best I could do was this photograph.

Some 40 guests assembled to hear Craig's niece, Elizabeth Foy, who had come from her home in France to unveil the plaque, speak about her memories of the times she spent in the cottage. The cottage's owner, Flora McCafferty, had also been a frequent visitor in her youth and some of her childhood friends were present. Also present were members of the Glens of Antrim Historical Society.

Brian Kennedy, former head of fine and applied art at the Uster Museum and biographer of Paul Henry, gave a wide ranging appreciation of Craig's work, comparing and contrasting it with that of Henry and other Irish landscape painters.

Craig was not the only artist who had a base in Cushendun. Watch this space.
