Double Blues for Carrickfergus Men - 6 December 2007 |
For the third time this year, the Ulster History Circle unveiled two blue plaques on the same day. Chairman Doreen Corcoran had worked closely with the Carrickfergus Museum and the local historical Society to arrange the events. The first unveiling was at Marine Cottage, the home of Carrick's own shipbuilder, and adjacent to the site of his shipyard. Rodgers' first ship, the schooner Accrington Lasss, was launched in 1874. He also designed The Result, now on display at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, and one of his vessels, The Mary B. Mitchell (1892), was converted in 1916 to a 'Q' ship (armed decoy for U boats) during the Great War. The plaque was unveiled by the Deputy Mayor, Patricia McKinney, who welcomed the guests, spoke abut Rodgers' contribution to the town and thanked the current owner of Marine Cottage, David Apsley, for allowing the plaque to be placed there. Half an hour later, the plaque to Daniel Cambridge VC was unveiled in High Street. Cambridge had been one of those presented with his VC by Queen Victoria at the first award ceremony in Hyde Park on 26 June 1857. Deputy Mayor Patricia McKinney welcomed some of Cambridge's descendants who were able to attend the ceremony. Afterwards, the guests were provided with refreshments by the Council. Below are some photographs of the event.
