A cold clear day it was as members of Bertie Rodgers' family, colleagues, friends and other guests gathered in East Belfast's Belmont Avenue to commemorate his life and work.
Wesley McCann, Chairman of the Ulster History Circle said that in recent years the Ulster History Circle had celebrated the achievements of a growing number of Ulster writers and broadcasters; and it was pleased to add the name of W.R. Rodgers to the list. His colleagues at the BBC, Louis MacNeice and Sam Hanna Bell, already have blue plaques and these serve to keep alive the memory of those women and men who have enriched the cultural life of the Province.
Jane Williams, member of the Heritage Lottery Fund Committee for Northern Ireland said that W.R. Rodgers was amongst the greats of Ulster's writers. His works have contributed so much to our cultural heritage and the Fund was delighted to support these plaques, which raise awareness of these important local figures and honour their achievements.
