An unseasonably fine February day was in it for the Circle's double header in the Maiden City when its blue plaque quota increased from three to five. A plaque to the Impresario H.B. Phillips on his former shop in Shipquay Street joined that of the Novelist Joyce Cary just round the corner in Bank Street and those of Novelist Kathleen Coyle and well-known Hymn Writer Cecil Frances Alexander in Bishop Street Within. Later the benefactor of Magee College, Martha Magee, was honored at the site of her legacy.
The Circle was honoured to have members of Phillips' family present at the unveiling that was carried out by the City's Mayor, Alderman Drew Thompson. It was also fitting that the author of Phillips' biography, Wesley McCann, was able to be there and speak about his life and achievements. The Circle acknowledges the contribution of the Heritage Lotterty Fund, which sponsored the Phillips plaque and Marie Gallagher, on behalf of the Fund, spoke of her pride in being able to make this contribution to her native City.
At Magee College, the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Professor James Allen, said how apt it was at last to be able to acknowledge in such a prominent way the contribution of this remarkable woman without whose generosity the College would never have been built. Future generations of students would no longer have to ask why it had the name Magee. The Circle is grateful to the College, which sponsored the plaque.
The fine weather held and the Circle members travelled back to Belfast in a bright spring sunshine that mirrored their mood after a satisfying day.
