Blue plaque for Kathleen Bridle - 12 November 2010 |
On a fine sunny November morning, a number of people representing a wide range of interests gathered at the former home of Kathleen Bridle to commemorate her memory and unveil a blue plaque in her honour. Among the guests were her neice, Madame Carol Durix and her husband and T.P. Flanagan, one of her pupils and himself a well known artist. At a reception in Fermanagh County Museum later, both later paid glowing tributes to Bridle. Terry Flanagan recalled how Miss Bridle allowed him to attend her adult evening painting class and how as the time for the class drew near so his excitement mounted. He acknowledged that she was a fine watercolourist in her own right. Welcoming the guests, Wesley McCann, Chairman of the Ulster History Circle said that in recent years the Ulster History Circle had celebrated the achievements of a number of artists from the north of Ireland, and was pleased to add the name of Kathleen Bridle to the list. The plaques kept alive the memory of those women and men who have enriched the cultural and scientific life of the Province. He thanked Fermanagh District Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund for their support and also Mr Michael Burns for allowing the plaque to be erected on his home. Councillor Stephen Huggett, Chairman of Fermanagh District Council said that Fermanagh District Council was delighted that this was the second blue plaque to be unveiled in Enniskillen this year. Previously, a blue plaque was erected in memory of the artist William Scott. This plaque commemorates William Scott's mentor, the artist and teacher Kathleen Bridle, whose work lives on through the many pupils she inspired, as well as in her own beautifully painted landscapes of the County. Gerry Burns, member of the Heritage Lottery Fund Committee for Northern Ireland, said that the blue plaque was a wonderful way to acknowledge the men and women who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of ideas and development of our society. Kathleen Bridle was certainly worthy of this honour for her major contribution to the arts in Northern Ireland and the Fund was delighted to be involved in commemorating her achievements. Some photos of the event are shown below.
