Deputy Mayor, Jim Fletcher, of Ards Borough Council welcomed everybody to the ceremony to honour Edmund De Wind. He welcomed in particular Johanna Flynn and her family who had traveled from Washington State in the USA. Joanna was Edmund's grand-niece, her grandmother, Florence, being Edmund's sister. Doreen Corcoran, Chairman of the Ulster History Circle, thanked the Council for its financial support for the plaque and all those others who had made this event possible. She reminded the group that the Circle had no independant source of funding. Cllr. Jim McBriar spoke of the action that had led to Edmunds death and recognition and praised his self-sarcrifice.
Johanna Flynn spoke movingly of her grandmother and of the qualities she felt sure would applied equally to Edmund. She hadn't known him of course but had known her grandmother. Click H E R E for copy of Johanna's address.
After the unveiling ceremony, performed jointly by the Deputy Mayor and Johanna, the company moved to the Comber Leisure Centre for refreshments provided by the Council.
