Blue plaque for William MacQuitty - 15 April 2011 |
It was glorious spring day, overlooking the sea, when the guest assembled at No 89 Princetown Road to commemorate a remarkable man of many talents in the house where he spent much of his youth. The guests included the Chairman and Chief Executive of Ulster Television, of which MacQuitty was a founding member, and Sir Kenneth and Lady Bloomfield. Welcoming the guests, Wesley McCann, Chairman of the Ulster History Circle said that Circle was pleased to erect this Blue Plaque in celebration of an outstanding film-maker, photographer and author whose work is of lasting importance. Blue plaques serve to keep alive the memory of those women and men who have enriched our cultural and scientific heritage and it was fitting that William MacQuitty should be added to the list. Mayor of North Down, Councillor John Montgomery said there was no more fitting a date to honour the life and work of William MacQuitty than today, the date the Titanic sank. His full address is available Here. William's widow, Betty and her daughters, Miranda and Jane were present and performed the unveiling ceremony. Mayor Montgomery kindly provided for a light lunch in Bangor Town Hall. Councillor Marion Smith addressed the guests. A copy of her address is available Here. Some photos of the event are shown below. |
