Blue Plaque for the "Father of the Suez Canal" - 23 June 2009 |
The majestic Mourne Mountains formed a dramatic backdrop to the ceremony honouring a soldier and adventurer. Francis Rawdon Chesney had been born in the house 120 years ago and although of diminutive stature (4ft 11ins tall) he was a bundle energy, even from his youngest days. Victor Price, member of the Ulster History Circle, provided a comprehensive, insightful and interesting discourse on Chesney's life and work. His survey of the route of the later Suez Canal provided Ferdinand de Lesseps with the information he needed to build it and he was generous in his praise of Chesney's fundamental contribution. Victor also thanked Newry and Mourne District Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund for their generous sponsorship. Ken Abraham, Assistant Curator of Newry Museum then unveiled the plaque.
