24 February 2005 - Blue Plaque Unveiling - Sir James Murray[ Click on photos for larger images and information] |
Although it was snowing heavily all down the east coast of Britain, the atmosphere in Belfast, while cold, was more emolient as the Ulster History Circle erected a blue plaque in memory of the inventor of the incomparable Milk of Magnesia, which has calmed fiery hearts, and stomaches, for some 180 years. The site of Sir James' home is now a busy street corner in the middle of a busy city centre and all around us were hurrying citizens, on foot and in vehicles. In addition to members of the Circle; (Doreen Corcoran, Dr James Hawthorne, Chris Ryder, Ian Hill, Sean Nolan and Pat Devlin), Cllr Nelson McCausland (with his wife Mary), Pier Morrow (Tourist Officer) and Julie Carson (Tourism Development Unit) attended on behalf of Belfast City Council and the City Centre Management Company were represented by Tom Smith (City Safe Officer) and Geraldine Duggan. The High Street Forum, a group of local business interests were also there. The cold and the hurrying traffic did not dampen the spirits although it did hurry the proceedings with the formal speeches being reserved for the warmer and more hospitable surroundings of the Bank of Ireland who graciously provided hot refreshments in their High Street premises. Cllr. McCausland gave an interesting talk on the life and achievements of Sir James and having been thanked by Mrs Corcoran was formally presented with a specimen of the "SOLUTION of MAGNESIA, as prepared by Mr Murray". These photographs give a flavour of the occasion.
