It was a bitingly cold, but bright morning in a rainy month, as the guests gathered on the lower Antrim Road to unveil a plaque to an eminent local mathematician and physicist. Professor Jim Boyd of the University of Essex had come over to Belfast specially for the event and gave the keynote address. Copy of Prof. Boyd's address is available HERE
The event was supported by Belfast City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund and these were represented by Jim Edgar from the Council and Bob Brown from the Fund's NI Committee. The owners of the building, Francis Crilly, Solicitors, were represented by Jane Crilly and Catriona Rooney.
We were privileged too to have a number of Joseph Larmor's distant relatives present - Cecil and Valerie Walkington, Geraldine Kidd, Marion Wilson and Brian, Salome and Conor Adams. Mrs Adams presented the Circle with a stone memorial plaque rescued from a now demolished gatepost at Larmor's demolished birthhouse. The Circle will arrange for the plaque to be donated to Lisburn Museum.
The unveiling ceremony over, the group repaired to the welcome warmth and elegance of the Diosecan Library in the nearby St Malachy's College, on which is displayed another of the Circle's Blue Plaques (Click HERE ), where refreshments were provided.
