31 March 2006 - Blue Plaque Unveiling - Samuel Beckett |
A cool and moist evening it was. The occasion attracted over 30 of the political, industrial and intellectual elite of County Fermanagh. For what was clearly regarded as an important cultural event in the celebration of the life and work of Samuel Beckett they had gathered to participate in the unveiling of an Ulster History's Blue Plaque to the second of Portora's illustrious pupils. Decorating the the school's wings, Oscar Wilde's and Samuel Beckett's blue plaque set off the frontage perfectly. Principal Neil Morton was everywhere, greeting guests as they arrived, arranging the loudspeaker equipment, organising the refreshments - a veritable whirlwind. He was ably assisted by school staff and pupils, four of whose Prefects, Colm Boyd, Colin Rutherford, David Buchanan and Warren Brownlee, were equally active, making sure that the refreshment kept coming. The major exhibition had been sponsored by the Irish Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and their representative, motored up from Dublin for the event. Bishop Michael Jackson and a number of other representatives of the various churches were there as was the Chairman of the Fermanagh District Council, Councillor Stephen Huggett. Also there was Diane Henshaw, the council's Arts Officer. The Council had helped to sponsor the plaque by providing a grant to the Ulster History Circle, which was represented by Dr. Ian Hill, Helena Chesney and Pat Devlin. The photos give a flavour of the event. |
